Central Standard – new in late 2015, Central Standard is a beautiful and modern American restaurant. It has a lovely terrace on South Congress, a perfect place for a pre-dinner drink!

Lamberts – delicious barbecue in the second street district. Atmosphere is very cool with an industrial feel to the place. The upstairs space is a live music venue and bar – the next stop after dinner?

Odd Duck – food truck turned permanent shabby chic restaurant. Delicious American grub, with some pretty unique things on the menu!

Homeslice Pizza – delicious pizza with two locations on South Congress, serving by the slice so you can try all the varieties!

Hopdoddy Burger Bar – one line: I’ve never seen longer queues for a burger anywhere.

Doc’s Bar & Grill – nice spot with a patio for a drink as the sun sets.

Easy Tiger – a bakery and beer garden in one. Grab a sampler board of meats and charcuterie and wait for your turn to play ping pong in the beer garden.

P. Terry’s Burger Stand – another one I haven’t tried yet, but I hear it’s the best burger in town from local friends!

Shady Grove – another one for my to do list. I only walked by  and never stopped in but it was buzzing. Great outdoor area for drinks!

FOODTRUCKS! – it seems Austin is the birthplace of the cool food truck concept – there are more of them here than anywhere. The truth is, I don’t really think you can have a bad meal in Austin, so make your way through the food trucks and please leave comments with suggestions!

 

Stay & Spa.

South Congress Hotel – boutique hotel with some New York style flare. The restaurants are fabulous too.

Hotel San Jose – another beautiful small boutique hotel in SoCo (South Congress) with a really local feel. It’s perfectly located for exploring the city and the walk to the river isn’t that far either.

Travaasa – A getaway out of the city, in the hill country area north of Austin. The resort is really beautifully located on a hill with fantastic views. Totally worth the drive.

Shop.

South Congress Avenue area – a long street full of shops, restaurants and food trucks leading to downtown across the river. I’ve listed a few of the shops I really like below.

Parts & Labour – trendy shop with everything from clothing and accessories to home goods and art. There are many local Austin / Texas items and not the touristy type!

Gypsy Wagon – another local shop with a variety of offerings and plenty of local / Texas pride gift items.

By George – super upscale apparel and accessory shop for both women and men. A nice array of candles his also available – my favourite!

Tom’s on South Congress – sure, you can buy Tom’s shoes anywhere. But this one has a coffee shop with indoor and outdoor seating within the shop, along with a hammock! What other store lets you sit around for hours?

Uncommon Objects – a really fun and eclectic shop with antiques from all categories.

Music.

Continental Club – You can’t go to Austin and not check out the music scene. I’ve never been to South by Southwest or ACL Music Festival (on the list!), but did get to check out a gig at the Continental Club. It’s small and cozy and somewhat of a little legend.
